Overgrowth
Overgrowth is the culmination of the second edition of the IAAC GSS program. Building upon the success of the previous year’s installation, this year’s exercise in collective construction expresses the same geometry in a dramatically different way. Using reclaimed wood from Ouroboros Deconstruction, the team connected foot-long wooden members with a series of 3D-printed nodes and vertex connectors, forming 55 tetrahedral modules. These nodes were then simultaneously aggregated together and anchored to a concrete host structure on the West Toronto Railpath. A solar-powered LED lighting system was then installed throughout the space-frame structure, reacting to noise generated by trains passing by on the adjacent tracks. Spherical voids in the structure were populated with a series of geometric planters, hosting native and edible plants that could grow along the wooden members. As a community-facing installation in a beloved location of the Junction Triangle neighbourhood, Overgrowth generated a large amount of interaction and spontaneous upkeep by passersby.
